| Products and Services: MTU Aero Engines is Germany‘s leading engine manufacturer and an established global player in the industry. It develops, manufactures, markets and maintains commercial and military aircraft engines and stationary gas turbines. MTU‘s products encompass all thrust and power categories and all major engine components and subsystems, including compressors, combustors and turbines. From a technological perspective, the company commands full systems integration capabilities and excels in low-pressure turbines and high-pressure compressors as well as manufacturing and repair techniques. In the military arena, MTU is the lead industrial partner for practically all engines flown by Germany‘s armed forces. Working closely with major players in the industry, MTU develops innovative propulsion systems and technologies and is a driving force in national and European technology programs. Figuring significantly among MTU‘s core competencies are the maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) of commercial engines and the full-service support it provides for industrial gas turbines. These activities have been drawn together under the umbrella of MTU Maintenance. The Group is the world‘s largest independent provider of commercial engine maintenance services. From its headquarters in Munich, MTU Aero Engines manages its subsidiaries and the majority of its research and development activities. The Munich site includes various shops where engine components are produced and is also home to MTU‘s military programs. Final assembly and testing of new military engines has been carried out here for decades, together with maintenance of existing engines. In 2009, MTU Aero Engines celebrated its 75th anniversary – BMW Flugmotorenbau GmbH was founded as a subsidiary of BMW AG in 1934 and is the legal predecessor of the company known today as MTU Aero Engines in Allach, Munich. |
| Research and Technology Development Priorities: MTU Aero Engines has launched its Claire (Clean Air Engine) technology program, a three-stage program that is designed to drastically cut carbon dioxide emissions by reducing fuel consumption. The company aims to slash carbon dioxide emissions by up to 30 percent by 2035. The Claire programme focuses on optimising the geared turbofan that MTU produces in collaboration with Pratt & Whitney. In the initial step, the company intends to reduce fuel consumption by up to 15 percent and to halve perceived noise. This engine has already been flight tested and is set to enter regular service in 2013. At the same time, MTU continues to develop innovative maintenance and repair techniques, while taking on pivotal roles in major national and European technology programmes. |
