| Products and Services: DLR, or the German Aerospace Center, is Germany’s national centre for aerospace research. It conducts a wide range of research and development work in the fields of aeronautics, space, energy, transportation, and security, also as a member of numerous national and international co-operative ventures. In addition to its own research activities, DLR is also responsible for the forward planning and implementation of the German space program on behalf of the German government, in its capacity as Germany’s national space agency. DLR is charged with the mission of exploring the Earth and the solar system, conducting research aimed at protecting the environment, and developing environmentally compatible technologies to promote mobility, communication and security. DLR’s research portfolio ranges from fundamental research to the development of innovative applications and products for tomorrow’s world. The scientific and technical know-how acquired by the DLR through these activities contributes to the enhancement of Germany’s status as an industrial and technology leader. DLR operates large-scale facilities for the centre’s own projects and as a service provider for clients and partners. It also helps to promote the next generation of scientists. Space DLR’s space research institutes possess key skills and expertise that they use to develop innovative technologies, improve the competitiveness of German industry, and to develop solutions to societal problems. The DLR Space Agency co-ordinates and unifies German space activities, including Germany’s contributions to the programs of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), Germany’s national space program, DLR’s space research and development program, and other space activities in science and industry. In its role as Germany’s national space agency, DLR manages space activities on behalf of and under the authority of the responsible government departments. Aeronautics DLR is the national centre of excellence for fundamental and applied aeronautics research, and also provides services to industry as a test centre for certain experimental development projects. DLR’s primary objective is to be a major contributor to the advancement of science and technology in the interests of assuring a sustainable future for the entire air transportation sector. |
